Yuri Umemoto - Endless Haruhi Scale (2023)

 

Anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" in its 2009 version, episodes 12 to 19, known as the "Endless Eight" arc (based on the fifth volume of the "Haruhi Suzumiya" series, "The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya"), depicts a science-fiction narrative of "time loops." The main character and her friends repeat a two-week period a total of "15,532 times." The anime broadcast experimentally extended this storyline over eight episodes, spanning two months, with the same events repeated every week. This approach sparked mixed reactions among viewers and became a topic of discussion.

There is a well-known work by John Cage, "Organ²/ASLSP", which is intended to be performed for 639 years. Interestingly, this duration of 639 years is nearly equal to 15 days multiplied by 15,532 loops, which results in 638 years and 110 days. Moreover, by adding the number 17 twice to the original count of 15,498 loops mentioned in the source material, it matches the count of 15,532 loops in the anime version. Adding 17 once more makes it exactly 639 years (15,549 loops + 17 = 15,566 loops; 15,566 loops × 15 days = 233,235 days; 233,235 days ÷ 365 = 639 years). This has led to a theory that this composition pays homage to the anime arc.*

 

Additionally, in the short story "The Seven Wonders Over Time" (2018) from the Haruhi Suzumiya series, there is a reference to John Cage. This further supports the possibility of a causal relationship between Cage's work and the anime.

 

In this work, "Endless Haruhi Scale," the distinctive eight-note phrase of the ending theme song "Hare Hare Yukai" from the anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" is repeated 12 times, shifting by a half-step each time, using the Shepard scale technique, resulting in the generation of a total of "15,532" musical notes.

The impression obtained through this "MAD" is that there are certain similarities between "Endless Eight" and the music of the Japanese art form called "Noh."

・Both provide the audience with an excessive experience of time.

・They repetitively express nearly identical "forms."

・The protagonist's mental state directly influences the progression of the narrative.

・By sustaining seemingly "insignificant events," even minor changes are perceived as "significant occurrences" in a relative sense, leading to the culmination of the story.

アニメ「涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱」2009年版、第12話〜第19話の「エンドレスエイト」（原作：「涼宮ハルヒシリーズ」第5巻「涼宮ハルヒの暴走」）では、主人公と仲間たちが夏休みの2週間を「15532回」繰り返す、「タイムループ」のSF的内容が描かれ、アニメ放送では全8話、2ヶ月に渡り同じ物語が毎週繰り返されるという実験的な手法が続き、視聴者の間で賛否両論を巻き起こし話題となった。ジョン・ケージに639年に渡って演奏する「Organ²/ASLSP」というオルガン作品があるが、この639年が15日間×15532回＝638年と110日とほぼ639年に一致することから、また、原作の15498回に17を2回足すと15532回（アニメ版の回数）だがさらに17を足すとぴったり639年になる（15532回+17=15549回 15549回×15日=233235日 233235日÷365=639年）ことから、この曲のオマージュであるという説も存在する*。また、涼宮ハルヒシリーズの短編「七不思議オーバータイム」（2018）では作品内でジョンケージに言及しており、このことからも、ケージとの因果関係の可能性は完全に否定できない。

 

「エンドレス・ハルヒ・スケール」は、アニメ「涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱」のエンディングテーマ「ハレ晴レユカイ」の特徴的な音階のフレーズ（8音）を無限音階（Shepard scale）の手法で半音ずつ12回繰り返し続け、最終的に「15532」個の音符を生成する。

 

最後に、突飛な話になるが、今回の「MAD」で辿り着いた感想は、「エンドレス・エイト」と日本の「能」の音楽には、少なからずの共通点があるのではないか？ということだ。

・観客に過度な時間体験を共有する。

・ほとんど同じ「型」の表現を幾度となく繰り返す。

・主人公の精神世界が物語の展開に直結する。

・「ほとんどなんでもないこと」の持続により、相対的に、些細な変化が「大きな出来事」と拡大して捉えられ、物語の終止に直結する。
